Artists obsessed with the personal, the political and the poetic
After bursting onto the cultural landscape of the hills in 2014, hillsceneLIVE continued to grow and develop in 2015. Driven by a desire to support the experimental, empower the risky, encourage the challenging and sit outside of the easily definable, hillsceneLIVE festival is a feast of live / time-based art practice that supports artists to experiment and realise creative ideas.
2015's festival was held on October 30th, 2015, at a very special location in Monbulk, Victoria.
This year, we supported 15 projects that asked big questions that revolved around the personal and political narratives of our time. From Middle Eastern conflicts, to a woman's right to choose, to deeply personal narratives of incredible poignancy, this was one blistering array of live performance and art.
In 2014, hillsceneLIVE presented its pretty head as three mini-festivals, each taking place in an alternative venue within the Dandenong Ranges. Our inaugural Winter event was held at Burrinja Cultural Centre, our Spring event armed audiences with a map of Belgrave and asked them to go in search live art in a multitude of alternatives spaces around town, and our final 2014 hurrah, the Summer event, was held at the incredible Mt Burnett Observatory.
Looking back at the events, programming and artist feedback from 2014, there were some interesting insights, namely the desire for artists to create stronger networks, develop and access further skills, and a continued commitment from hillsceneLIVE to supporting artists who are taking bold risks in their practice.
